Newtown High School’s First Football Team Marks a Historic Milestone
After nearly 130 years of existence, Newtown High School in Elmhurst is set to field its inaugural football team, a development made possible by a $6 million overhaul of its athletic complex that broke ground on June 17.
The first phase of the project delivered a modern track and field that can host soccer, baseball and football, while the second phase promises a state‑of‑the‑art scoreboard and night‑time lighting, a vision championed by Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, who has pledged $2.5 million toward those upgrades.
City Council Member Shekar Krishnan also contributed $750,000 to the renovation, underscoring a shared commitment to revitalize the school’s sports infrastructure and to create a venue that can serve more than 350 student‑athletes and the school’s total enrollment of 1,750 pupils.
Principal Bill Psoras described the transformation as “a game‑changer for our students,” emphasizing how the new facilities will foster school pride, encourage physical activity and provide a welcoming space for the community, especially immigrant families seeking extracurricular opportunities.
Wayne Crawford, the project’s director, oversaw the construction and said the upgraded field reflects a broader ambition to expand athletic offerings and to anchor the school’s identity within the neighborhood.
