The North American Hockey League (NAHL) is preparing for a significant expansion, bringing professional hockey to Pueblo, Colorado, for the 2026‑27 season. The move marks a strategic shift for the league as it taps into the city’s growing sports market and rich cultural heritage.
The relocation involves the former Chippewa Steel franchise, which will now operate under the new Pueblo identity. This transition places the team within the league’s newly created Mountain Division, positioning it against regional rivals and fostering cross‑border competition.
The existing Pueblo Bulls franchise will be retired, and its longtime owner, Jerry Wilhite, will step down from his managerial role. His departure clears the path for a fresh leadership group that includes David Nelson, Chris Wilhite, Marty Wakelyn, Austin Hoff, and the Pueblo Sports Management and Entertainment Group (PSMEG).
Leadership and Community Partnerships
The newly assembled leadership team brings a blend of playing experience and organizational expertise. Their vision emphasizes community engagement, youth development, and a sustainable business model that can support the sport in the region.
PSMEG has assumed control of the Pueblo Ice Arena, the team’s primary venue, and will oversee all operational aspects. The group has pledged to honor every existing season‑ticket commitment and to uphold current sponsorship agreements, ensuring continuity for fans and partners alike.
The schedule for the inaugural season includes 66 games, split evenly between home and away fixtures, with a highlight three‑game showcase slated for Blaine, Minnesota. This exposure aims to raise the team’s profile and attract new supporters beyond Colorado’s borders.
A distinctive name and logo will be crafted to reflect Pueblo’s unique cultural identity, drawing on local traditions, art, and history. The branding effort will involve community input to ensure the final design resonates with residents and captures the spirit of the city.
