The University of Nevada announced this week that Matthew Kinney will serve as its new pitching coach, stepping into the role after four seasons of Mark Moriarty’s leadership.
A Fresh Coaching Vision
Kinney arrives with a résumé that includes three years as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Southeast Missouri State, where he guided the Redhawks to two NCAA Regional appearances and back‑to‑back Ohio Valley Conference tournament championships.
His staffs have been praised for toughness, preparation and an attack‑mindset on the mound. At SEMO his pitchers posted a 5.07 team ERA, ranked 71st nationally, and collected ten All‑OVC honors, including 2021 OVC Pitcher of the Year Dylan Dodd.
Before coaching, Kinney earned a reputation as a reliable starter at Florida State, where he was named second‑team all‑conference, and later signed professional contracts with the Atlanta Braves and Boston Red Sox organizations.
‘I’m excited to join the Wolf Pack and help shape the next generation of pitchers,’ Kinney said in a statement, noting his eagerness to work with the university’s student‑athletes and staff.
The move comes as Nevada looks to improve a program that posted a 7.73 ERA last season, the worst mark in school history, and to build on Kinney’s proven ability to identify talent and develop arms.
