Tallahassee State College announced this week that Brett Rutherford will assume the role of Director of Athletics, while Trent Short will take the helm of the men’s basketball program beginning July 1.
A Strategic Shift for Tigers Athletics
Rutherford, a Florida State University alumnus, returns to the Tallahassee area after stints at Wake Technical Community College, bringing a blend of administrative experience and a student‑focused philosophy. He will succeed Chuck Moore, whose contract was not renewed, and will be tasked with shaping the college’s athletic strategy as it seeks to elevate its competitive profile.
Short arrives with a strong coaching pedigree, having compiled a 117‑45 record over nine seasons and most recently led Chipola College to multiple NJCAA Tournament appearances. His career has spanned Jones College, the University of Mobile, and Central Methodist University, where he honed a reputation for developing talent that has moved on to Division I programs such as Florida A&M and Western Kentucky.
The appointments were highlighted by Dr. Sheri Rowland and Dr. Jim Murdaugh, who praised the new leaders for their proven track records and commitment to academic and athletic excellence. Their endorsement underscores the college’s intention to align athletics with its broader mission of student success.
Both hires replace outgoing figures: Moore’s departure follows a contract non‑renewal, while Corey Hendren, the former head coach, transitioned to an NCAA Division I assistant role at Georgia State University. The college hopes the new leadership will build on recent successes and expand opportunities for its student‑athletes.
