Former Providence basketball star Duncan Powell was cleared of two misdemeanor charges following a bench trial in Providence District Court, ending a case that drew attention across Rhode Island.
The allegations stemmed from a March incident in which a woman said Powell threw a water bottle at her, causing a knee injury, and later threatened to use a firearm against her and others in a Cranston home.

The three‑day trial featured testimony from the alleged victim, police officers and several witnesses, after which the judge delivered a not‑guilty verdict on both counts.
Prosecutors had charged Powell with domestic violence‑simple assault and/or battery and domestic violence‑disturbing the peace, but the defense argued that the evidence was insufficient and that the threats were never carried out.
Police confirmed that no weapon was found on Powell at the time of his arrest on March 29, though the woman reported hearing him mention a gun.
Powell, a native of Dallas who completed his fifth year of eligibility last season, had been a key player for the Providence team before stepping away from the court.
The verdict brings closure to a saga that combined sports, domestic concerns and legal scrutiny, leaving the former athlete free to pursue future endeavors.
