Glen Cove Junior Soccer League Brings World Cup Watch Parties to Life
The Glen Cove Junior Soccer League has turned its love of the beautiful game into a community celebration, staging a series of FIFA World Cup watch parties that have become a seasonal highlight for residents.
The inaugural gathering, held at Morgan Park on a rainy Saturday, attracted roughly 500 spectators who braved the weather to enjoy food trucks, raffles, live music and a giant outdoor screen that streamed the opening match.
Rain‑Soaked Kickoff Becomes a Community Triumph
Despite the downpour, the crowd’s enthusiasm never waned; organizers kept the screen running and the festivities alive, turning what could have been a canceled event into a memorable experience for families and friends.
League second vice president Brett Newman, who launched the initiative to give back to the neighborhood that has supported youth soccer for years, said the events are about more than the sport; they are a chance for families from different backgrounds to connect over a shared passion.
Looking Ahead to July Events
The league has scheduled two more watch parties: one on June 27 at Pascucci Field and another on July 19 in Village Square, each timed to coincide with key World Cup matches and featuring pre‑match activities such as the annual coaches game.
League President James M. Greenberg praised Newman’s vision, noting that the partnership with the city’s Department of Parks and Recreation and the Long Island Motion Picture Arts Center and Museum has amplified the reach of the watch parties.
Parks and Recreation Director Spiro Tsirkas added that the city has provided promotion, staffing and logistical support, and organizers hope word of mouth will drive even larger crowds to the final event, where local businesses plan special offerings.
