Coach David Shaw’s Recognition
The New York Giants have announced that Coach David Shaw of Waverly High School has been selected as the High School Girls Flag Football Coach of the Week for week 7 of the 2026 season. The honor highlights the program’s rapid rise and the coach’s impact on student‑athletes.
A Season of Excellence
Along with the accolade, Shaw will receive a $2,000 check earmarked for the Waverly girls flag football program and a certificate personally signed by Giants head coach John Harbaugh, underscoring the franchise’s commitment to grassroots development.
Shaw has overseen the Wolverines since the program’s inception in 2023, guiding them to a 10‑2 record this year while maintaining a defensive clamp that limits opponents to 18 points or fewer per game.
The team’s offensive firepower is evident in its 1,800 receiving yards, 1,420 rushing yards, 34 receiving touchdowns and 17 rushing touchdowns, while the defense has forced 18 interceptions and recorded 24 sacks.
A highlight came in a 31‑14 victory over Owego Free Academy that secured the squad’s first divisional championship, a moment that capped a season of steady improvement.
Superintendent Dr. Eric Knolles praised the flag football initiative for providing students with a collaborative outlet that extends beyond the field, fostering confidence, teamwork and humility.
Looking ahead, Shaw and his staff remain focused on sustaining competitive play while continuing to embed life‑lesson values that prepare their athletes for future challenges.
