Wheeling University’s Coaches in the Spotlight
Two coaches from Wheeling University have been named finalists for the 2026 Mountain East Conference Coach of the Year award, a testament to the programs’ dramatic progress over the past season.
Richardson’s Historic Turnaround
Chris Richardson steered the men’s basketball team from a 11‑18 record the previous year to a 19‑9 finish, securing the No. 3 seed in the MEC tournament and collecting a suite of individual honors, including the WV MetroNews Joe Retton MEC Coach of the Year Award.
Lewicki’s Baseball Excellence
Ryan Lewicki guided the baseball squad to a 36‑16 record, capturing the MEC North Division title and earning the No. 1 seed for the conference championship.
Seven players under his direction earned All‑MEC honors, with Pitcher of the Year Sebastian Khan and Hitter of the Year Edward Mateo leading the group; Khan also received First Team All‑Region recognition and became the second All‑American in program history.
Award ceremony set for June 29
Voting for the 2025‑2026 Male and Female Sports Coach of the Year awards remains open, and the winners will be announced on Monday, June 29.
