A New Era for Baker’s Parks
BREC officials recently unveiled a comprehensive plan to upgrade the baseball fields at Baker Park, promising synthetic turf, dedicated practice areas, a new concession stand, batting cages and expanded parking.
During a public meeting, three layout concepts were presented, each centered on a four‑field complex; planners favored a design that places concessions and batting facilities in the middle of the field to maximize accessibility.
The initiative extends beyond Baker Park. Upgrades are also slated for South Magnolia Park, where walking loops, modernized playgrounds, additional sports fields, a baseball diamond and tennis courts are under consideration.
Harding Street Park has already benefited from recent improvements to its baseball field and restroom facilities, and officials are now exploring further enhancements to the site.
Greenwood Park, situated between North Baton Rouge and Baker, is expected to break ground soon, adding to the city’s growing portfolio of recreational assets.
Timeline and Funding
Construction on the Baker and South Magnolia projects is projected to commence in 2027 and is expected to span approximately one year, according to BREC’s schedule.
Mayor Darnell Waites emphasized that these investments represent a decade‑long commitment to the community, noting that future phases could include a state‑of‑the‑art community center that would serve residents of all ages.
City officials anticipate that the upgraded facilities will not only boost local sports participation but also generate economic activity, attract families and enhance overall quality of life in the region.
