A group of senior football players from across Washington converged in Yakima this week, preparing for the 32nd Annual Earl Barden East‑West All Star football classic. The West squad, composed of the state's most promising talents, arrived on Tuesday and immediately began a rigorous twice‑daily practice regimen to master new schemes before Saturday's contest.
Montesano Leads the West Contingent
Montesano High School contributed seven players to the West roster, a testament to the school's consistent production of elite athletes. In the days leading up to the game, three additional Montesano seniors — Lucas Delgado, Isac Hawkins and Kyle Caton — were invited to join the West team, bolstering its depth and versatility.
The West lineup also features standout performers from neighboring districts, including Chris Banker of Raymond/South Bend and Blane King of Pe Ell/Willapa Valley. Banker, who amassed over 1,600 rushing yards in his senior season and set a school record with 318 yards in a single game against Forks, brings a powerful ground attack. King, an all‑league receiver and defensive back, averages more than 20 yards per reception and anchors a secondary praised for its coverage skills.
A Crunch Time Challenge
With only a few days to learn new offensive and defensive playbooks, the players have embraced an intense schedule of drills and strategy sessions. Coaches emphasize rapid adaptation, and the athletes report feeling both challenged and motivated by the compressed preparation window.
