From June 19 to 21, 2026, the historic Naval Base Coronado in San Diego will host the first NASCAR race ever held on an active U.S. military installation, marking a milestone that fuses high‑speed competition with the Navy’s rich heritage.
The event is part of the "Race the Base" series and commemorates the 250th anniversaries of both the United States Navy and the nation, underscoring a partnership designed to showcase naval tradition, foster public engagement, and highlight the stories of sailors and their families.
All three of NASCAR’s national series will compete on the 16‑turn, 3.4‑mile Qualcomm Circuit, a layout that blends the base’s scenic coastal setting with challenging road‑course design.
A milestone for the Navy and motorsports
Capt. Loren Jacobi, commanding officer of Naval Base Coronado, emphasized that the race is a tribute to the Navy’s history and a unique opportunity to connect service members with civilians through sport.
NASCAR Senior Director Jeremy Casperson noted that coordinating the event required a learning curve, but the collaboration has yielded a blueprint for future military‑sport partnerships.
Families will enjoy a weekend of activities, including Navy demonstrations, interactive exhibits, and special appearances by drivers and service personnel, creating a festive atmosphere for visitors of all ages.
Naval Base Coronado’s selection was influenced by its status as the "Birthplace of Naval Aviation" and its strategic role in fleet readiness, housing numerous fleet commands and support units that will benefit from the heightened visibility.
Logistics and security
The race’s infrastructure includes 6.8 miles of barriers and fencing, while security plans involve a coordinated effort among federal, state, and local agencies to ensure the safety of participants and the surrounding community.
Beyond the track, the event serves as a platform for outreach, with NASCAR driver Alex Bowman leading an initiative to pack 1,000 USO care packages for deployed service members, his car featuring a red, white, and blue design co‑branded with primary sponsor Ally and the USO.
Service to those who serve
Bowman’s effort builds on the USO’s 2025 campaign, which distributed 435,000 care packages across more than 100 countries, reflecting a deep commitment to supporting active‑duty troops and their families.
Bridget Sponsky, executive director of brand, sponsorship, and creative marketing at Ally, highlighted the partnership’s significance, stating that supporting the USO aligns with the company’s broader mission to give back to the communities that inspire its employees and customers.
The convergence of sport, naval tradition, and community service promises a weekend that will resonate far beyond the finish line, illustrating how racing can be a conduit for gratitude, connection, and shared purpose.
