The Northern Kentucky Youth Football League (NKYFL) is poised to launch a girls‑only flag football season this autumn, marking a new chapter for youth sports in the region.
A milestone for girls’ athletics
Starting in August and running through October, the inaugural campaign will welcome participants aged eight to twelve from seven counties spanning Greater Northern Kentucky, offering a structured pathway for young athletes to compete.
The initiative follows the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s (KHSAA) recent decision to sanction girls’ flag football as a championship sport, a move that makes Kentucky the 23rd state nationwide to adopt the discipline.
A historic league expands its reach
NKYFL, founded in 1958, is the oldest continuously operating youth football league in the area and currently comprises 19 member organizations that serve families across Boone, Kenton, Campbell, Gallatin, Pendleton, and Grant counties.
Beyond flag football, the league also offers tackle football, flag football and cheerleading programs for children aged five to twelve, reflecting its broad commitment to inclusive athletic programming.
Statewide and national context
The sanctioning by KHSAA aligns with a broader push across the country to expand girls’ sports, with the new league expected to inspire similar programs in neighboring regions and to further cement flag football’s growing popularity.
