Wheeling University Announces 2026 Men’s Soccer Schedule Under New Coach Jack Shearer

Season opener set for August 27, with key home stretches and a final showdown against West Liberty

Wheeling University has unveiled its 2026 men’s soccer schedule, marking the first full campaign under head coach Jack Shearer, who was appointed to the position on May 8. The announcement comes as the program seeks to rebound from a difficult 2025 season that ended with a 1‑15‑1 record.

Schedule Highlights

The 2026 slate features nine home contests out of a 16‑game schedule, beginning with a road test at California University of Pennsylvania on August 27. The home opener follows two days later against Walsh, and the first Mountain East Conference North Division matchup arrives on September 16 against Davis & Elkins. A late‑season stretch in September and October will see the Cardinals host a series of key opponents before the regular season culminates with “The Battle for Wheeling” against West Liberty on October 28 at 5 p.m.

Despite the challenging record, the Cardinals showed signs of progress on defense, limiting two of their first three opponents to a single goal and securing their first point of the season in a 1‑1 draw with West Liberty. The team also recorded its maiden victory with a 2‑0 shutout over Salem on September 17, and finished the year with five goals across the final two matches.

Conference realignment will see Salem join the MEC as a new member, reshaping the league’s structure into two divisions. Wheeling’s coaching staff hopes the revised schedule and increased home exposure will translate into a deeper run in the MEC Tournament, something the program has not achieved since the 2022 season.

Coach Shearer expressed optimism about the roster’s potential, emphasizing the blend of experienced defenders and emerging attackers. “We have a foundation to build on,” he said. “Our goal is to compete hard in every match and give our fans a season to remember.”
