A New Era Begins for Iowa State Cyclones
The Iowa State Cyclones men's basketball program will enter the 2026‑27 season with a completely reshaped roster, as head coach T.J. Otzelberger announced that longtime contributors Tamin Lipsey, Nate Heise, Milan Momcilovic and Joshua Jefferson will not return.
Otzelberger has addressed the void by bringing in five newcomers from the transfer portal alongside three freshmen from the Class of 2026, aiming to blend experience with youthful energy.
The tentative starting five he envisions features Jaquan Johnson, Killyan Toure, Jamarion Batemon, Tre Singleton and Blake Buchanan, a mix that promises versatility but also raises questions about shooting and interior presence.
Johnson and Batemon are currently the only proven threats from beyond the arc, while Toure's emerging confidence in his three‑point shot could provide the needed perimeter firepower.
However, the backcourt will be among the shortest in the lineup, and the lack of size on the wing may expose the team defensively, prompting Otzelberger to consider inserting Leon Bond III in place of Batemon to bolster rebounding.
Addressing the boards will place added pressure on Singleton and Buchanan, who will be tasked with cleaning the glass while the coaching staff evaluates the best configuration for the upcoming campaign.
