Ecuadorian Community Unveils Soccer Mural in Kansas City Ahead of 2026 World Cup

The artwork, featuring stars Willian Macho and Lionel Messi, celebrates culture and anticipates a massive fan influx

A vibrant tribute on Main Street

The side of Senorita Margarita at the intersection of 20th and Main streets now bears a colorful mural that captures the spirit of Ecuador’s passionate fan base.

Created by street artist MisterAlek in collaboration with Paulina Tabares, the piece weaves together iconic soccer imagery with symbols of Ecuadorian identity.

At its center, the faces of Willian Macho, a Paris Saint‑Germain defender and UEFA champion, and Lionel Messi, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in history, stare out from the wall, linking local pride with global football legends.

The artwork was commissioned as part of Kansas City’s preparations to host matches for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a tournament that will see the city’s Arrowhead Stadium fill with thousands of Ecuadorian supporters.

Organizers estimate that up to 40,000 fans will travel to the region for the tournament, and the mural serves as a visual rallying point for a community eager to showcase its traditions, music, and cuisine during the global event.

Antonella Marcks, president of the Ecuadorian diaspora group in Kansas City, says the mural is more than decoration; it is a statement of belonging and a way to invite the world to experience Ecuadorian culture firsthand.

Beyond the visual impact, the project reflects a broader ambition to use sport as a bridge between continents, fostering connections that extend far beyond the pitch.

Matches on the horizon

The schedule places Argentina against Algeria on June 16 and Ecuador against Curacao on June 20, both to be played at Arrowhead Stadium, a venue that will transform into a sea of green, yellow, and blue for the occasion.
