A Legendary Career Comes to a Close
Jonathan Toews announced his retirement on Tuesday, ending a 1,149‑game NHL career that produced 912 points and secured three Stanley Cups, two Olympic gold medals and a place in the Triple Gold Club, the exclusive circle of players who have captured every major championship in hockey.
As captain of the Chicago Blackhawks, Toews led a talented roster that dominated the early 2010s, guiding the team to three Cup titles and forging a reputation for leadership both on and off the ice.
His collegiate years at the University of North Dakota were equally formative. Toews skated on a celebrated line with Ryan Duncan and T.J. Oshie, lived in Walsh Hall as a freshman and later shared a house with Matt Watkins, Taylor Chorney, Brad Miller and others. Under the guidance of head coach Brad Berry, associate head coach Matt Smaby and the broader staff, he helped the program reach back‑to‑back Frozen Fours and set a record for combined NHL experience among his teammates.
Looking Ahead
Toews said he plans to slow down, explore life beyond the rink and remain connected to the sport he loves. He hinted at a possible return to The Ralph, the arena at the University of North Dakota, while also expressing gratitude for the mentors and teammates who shaped his journey.
Friends and former teammates such as Chay Genoway, whom he visited in Salzburg a few years ago, and current UND staff members Dane Jackson and Matt Smaby remain part of his extended hockey family.
