A 31‑year‑old man, Darren DeHerrera, has been charged with murder after a brutal assault that left Dwayne Burwell dead in Southeast Albuquerque. The incident, which shocked the local community, unfolded on June 11 when DeHerrera entered the Smoke Depot carrying a baseball bat.
According to the police complaint, DeHerrera chased Burwell outside the shop and struck him repeatedly with the bat. Witnesses reported that Burwell did not pose any threat to DeHerrera, making the attack appear unprovoked.
Surveillance and Witness Identification
Investigators relied heavily on surveillance footage that captured DeHerrera entering the store with the bat and pursuing Burwell onto the street. A witness at the scene identified the attacker, referring to him only as "Strife," and later confirmed his identity through previously released mugshots.
The medical examiner’s report detailed that Burwell suffered skull fractures and a deep head laceration, injuries that proved fatal on June 14, three days after the assault.
Prior Criminal History
DeHerrera’s involvement in the June attack is not his first encounter with the criminal justice system. In April, he was charged with shoplifting and conspiracy after allegedly stealing nearly $800 worth of merchandise from Rack Room Shoes. Those charges were still pending when the Smoke Depot incident occurred.
Legal Actions
Following the investigation, a warrant for DeHerrera’s arrest was issued on June 16. Prosecutors have filed an open count of murder, a charge that carries a potential life sentence if convicted. Gilbert Gallegos, a spokesperson for the Albuquerque Police Department, confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing and that DeHerrera posed no threat to Burwell prior to the attack.
The case has sparked renewed discussion about violent crime in the city, with community leaders urging increased resources for law enforcement and victim support services. As the legal process moves forward, the family of Dwayne Burwell continues to seek answers and accountability.
