A Global Talent Joins the Hokies
Virginia Tech’s women’s basketball program announced the addition of Francesca Baldassarre, a promising guard from Italy, to its 2026 recruiting class. The signing marks the third freshman arrival and the only international prospect in the cohort, underscoring the Hokies’ expanding recruiting reach.
Baldassarre grew up in Brindisi, a city in the Apulia region of southern Italy, and developed her game in the country’s top women’s league, Serie A1, with Afora Givova Battipaglia. Over the past two seasons she has logged double‑digit scoring performances in eight consecutive contests, highlighted by an 18‑point outing against BCC Derthona.
Her statistical profile shows an average of 8.9 points and 3.3 rebounds per game in her most recent league season, complemented by a 4.9‑point contribution in seven appearances for the Italian U20 national team and nearly 12 points per game at the U18 level. Representing Italy in both FIBA U20 and U18 competitions, she brings international tournament experience that should translate well to the collegiate stage.
The Hokies now sit at 12 scholarship players for the 2026‑27 roster, three shy of the NCAA’s 15‑player limit. Baldassarre’s arrival not only bolsters depth but also adds a versatile backcourt option capable of stretching defenses and creating scoring opportunities off the dribble.
Coaches see her signing as part of a broader strategy to infuse the program with global talent, a trend that has already paid dividends in recruiting and on‑court performance. With a redshirt year available, Baldassarre will have ample time to adapt to the ACC’s pace and physicality while contributing immediately.
