A Freshman's Resilient Journey
Blanca Quiñonez, the UConn women's basketball standout, finished her freshman campaign as the team's most reliable sixth player, earning Freshman and Sixth Player of the Year honors in the Big East.
Despite battling a torn labrum for much of the season, she helped the Huskies reach the Final Four, averaging 15.2 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.1 steals while shooting 53.6% from the field.
In May, Quiñonez underwent successful surgery on her left shoulder at UConn Health, a procedure that repaired the injury that had forced her to play with tape and a brace.
The forward is now focused on rehabilitation, having removed her recovery sling about a month after the operation, and she expects to be fully cleared by September or October.
Having arrived in Storrs last August after missing the summer session due to high school commitments in Italy, she missed the first two games and later sat out six contests after a hard fall at Seton Hall in late January.
Her impact was most evident in the NCAA Tournament, where she erupted for 20 points and eight rebounds in the Elite Eight against Notre Dame, sparking a comeback that carried through to the Final Four.
With Azzi Fudd graduating, Quiñonez will inherit a larger offensive role next season, a challenge she welcomes as she aims to increase her scoring alongside Sarah Strong.
The Huskies' coaching staff remains confident that the sophomore will return to full health in time for the fall semester, ready to contribute to another championship push.
