Century High School to Name Baseball Field After Legendary Coach Keith Kangas

A tribute to three decades of mentorship, championship success, and community service

A ceremony is scheduled at Century High School to dedicate its baseball field in honor of the late coach Keith Kangas, who passed away in 2019 at the age of 62. The tribute reflects a community’s gratitude for a mentor who shaped generations of players.

Kangas devoted more than three decades to the program, guiding Century to a state championship in 2003 and steadily expanding the school’s baseball infrastructure. His efforts included extensive fundraising, field maintenance, and the creation of pathways for young athletes to pursue the sport at higher levels.

Beyond the high school ranks, he also coached the Rochester A’s, leading the team to the U.S. Legion Baseball World Series in 2003. He stepped away from the A’s in 2010 and retired from Century High in 2013, leaving behind a program that continues to thrive.

Former John Marshall High School coach Terry Heiderscheit praised Kangas for setting a standard that many in Minnesota’s baseball community strive to emulate. He noted that Kangas’ influence extended far beyond wins, emphasizing his role as a teacher and community builder.

A lasting legacy

The renamed field will serve as a living reminder of Kangas’ commitment, offering future players a place to practice and compete while embodying the values he championed — discipline, teamwork, and relentless dedication.

Community members have rallied around the initiative, submitting letters that underscore the profound impact Kangas had on the local baseball landscape. The dedication ceremony is expected to draw alumni, families, and fellow coaches, uniting them in a shared celebration of his enduring legacy.
