A New Era for the NTDP
Kevin Porter has been hired as the new head coach of the National Team Development Program (NTDP), the United States’ premier amateur hockey pipeline. The appointment signals a strategic move to blend elite playing experience with forward‑thinking coaching philosophy.
Porter’s résumé reads like a Hall of Fame biography: a 12‑year professional career that amassed 249 NHL games, a coveted Hobey Baker Memorial Award, and a Stanley Cup championship. Those achievements underscore a rare combination of individual excellence and team success.
From Player to Coach
Before assuming his new responsibilities, Porter spent two seasons as an assistant coach with the NTDP, where he helped steer Team USA to its first Hlinka Gretzky Cup title since 2004. His leadership was instrumental in shaping a roster that captured the nation’s attention.
Internationally, Porter captained the U.S. team at the 2006 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship and contributed to a silver‑medal finish at the 2004 IIHF Under‑18 Men’s World Championship, experiences that forged his competitive edge.
A Championship Coaching Debut
Porter’s coaching trajectory also includes four seasons as an assistant with the Wilkes‑Barre/Scranton Penguins in the American Hockey League, where he mentored prospects transitioning to the professional ranks.
