Robby Bales Exits Colorado School of Mines After Eight Seasons

Longtime coach departs following record-breaking tenure and multiple NCAA tournament runs

A Legacy in the Rockies

Robby Bales, who has steered the Colorado School of Mines baseball program for eight years, revealed his resignation this week, ending a chapter that saw the Orediggers capture multiple RMAC tournament championship game appearances and earn repeated berths in the NCAA tournament. His departure follows a 21‑33 record in his most recent season and a cumulative 180‑173 record that ties him for second place on the program’s all‑time wins list.

Bales first joined the Mines staff in 2016 as the second assistant coach before being named interim head coach after the 2018 season. He was elevated to permanent head coach thereafter, building a culture that produced 29 All‑RMAC honorees, 21 all‑region selections and eight all‑America nods, while also mentoring two RMAC Pitchers of the Year, including Tyler Blomster, the conference’s all‑time wins leader.

Under his guidance the Orediggers reached the RMAC tournament championship game this season, falling to Colorado Mesa, and had previously contested title games in 2019, 2022, 2023 and 2024. The program’s trajectory also included NCAA tournament appearances in several of those years, highlighting Bales’ ability to consistently compete at the national level. Two of his players have gone on to sign professional contracts, underscoring his impact on player development.

A Utah native, Bales leaves a program that has flourished under his leadership both on the field and in the classroom, where seven athletes earned CSC Academic All‑America honors. His resignation marks the end of a tenure that not only ranks among the most successful in Mines history but also helped raise the profile of baseball across the Rocky Mountain region.
