Washington University has officially appointed DeAndre Haynes as an assistant coach for the 2026‑27 basketball season, a move that underscores the program’s intent to bolster its Big Ten competitiveness.
Haynes arrives after a five‑year stint as an assistant at Marquette University under head coach Shaka Smart, where he helped the Golden Eagles secure a conference tournament title and a Sweet 16 appearance.
A New Era for the Huskies
Prior to Marquette, he contributed to the University of Michigan’s staff under John Beilein, a period that included a Big Ten tournament championship and a Sweet 16 run, and later served at the University of Maryland, where the Terrapins captured a regular‑season Big Ten crown under Mark Turgeon.
The hiring also reflects Haynes’s international playing background; after a five‑year professional career that took him to Belgium, Finland, Germany and Hungary, he transitioned into coaching, bringing a global perspective to the Huskies’ roster, which may feature up to four international players next season.
Head coach Danny Sprinkle expressed confidence that Haynes’s blend of playing experience, Big Ten pedigree and strategic acumen will help the Huskies improve on their recent 11 conference wins over the past two seasons and aim for deeper postseason runs.
