A New Chapter for the Lightning
Sage Hill School announced the appointment of Jethro Julian as its permanent girls basketball coach and program director, a move that consolidates his role after a successful interim period. Julian, a former collegiate player, will now guide the program across grades seven through twelve while also teaching physical education and taking on additional school responsibilities.
The Lightning’s recent campaign was nothing short of historic. Finishing the season at 28‑6, the team captured the top spot in Orange County and advanced to the Open Division final of the CIF Southern California Regional, where they fell to eventual state champion Ontario Christian. The run propelled the squad to a national ranking of No. 8, underscoring the program’s rapid rise.
Player of the Year and Program Momentum
Senior guard Amalia Holguin was honored as Orange County Player of the Year, the first such accolade for a boy or girl in the school’s history, highlighting the impact of Julian’s coaching on individual development.
Julian succeeded longtime coach Kerwin Walters, who was replaced early in the 2025‑26 season. The transition was seamless enough that the team maintained its momentum, a testament to the preparation and culture Julian has cultivated.
A Coaching Change at Brea Olinda
Meanwhile, Brea Olinda has selected Alex Koers as its new head coach, a decision confirmed by principal Joey Davis. Koers brings a blend of classroom instruction and on‑court experience, having taught at the school and previously coached at Rowland while also playing at Whittier College.
Both hires signal a period of stability and ambition for the schools’ basketball programs, as they look to build on recent successes and develop the next generation of talent.
