Jaleesa Sams has stepped into a new role as the head coach of the Wilberforce University women's basketball program, bringing with her a proven track record of turning programs into contenders and fostering academic achievement among student‑athletes.
A Turnaround at Rust College
During her tenure at Rust College, Sams rebuilt the roster from the ground up, guiding the team to a conference tournament championship and a berth in the NAIA National Tournament. She developed multiple all‑conference performers and earned the conference tournament MVP, showcasing her ability to identify talent and implement effective strategies.
Seven Years at North Carolina A&T State University
Sams spent more than seven years as an assistant coach at North Carolina A&T State University, where the Aggies captured four MEAC regular‑season championships and three MEAC tournament titles. Her contributions helped the program achieve five 20‑win seasons and produced numerous all‑conference and postseason award recipients, reinforcing her reputation as a builder of winning cultures.
Player Development and Academic Excellence
Beyond wins, Sams emphasizes academic accountability and holistic player development. She has consistently guided teams to a 100 percent graduation rate, ensuring that student‑athletes excel both on the court and in the classroom. Her philosophy centers on preparing athletes for success in life, not just in sport.
Looking Forward
As she begins her new chapter at Wilberforce, Sams is focused on sustaining competitive play while upholding the university's academic standards. She aims to create an environment where future generations of women can thrive as athletes, scholars, and leaders, continuing the legacy of excellence she has established at previous institutions.
