SIUE men's basketball head coach Brian Barone announced the addition of Jacob Whitehead as an assistant coach, a move that underscores the program’s commitment to continuity and growth.
Whitehead, a native of Flora, Illinois, first stepped onto the SIUE campus in 2017 as a student manager, quickly rising to a graduate assistant and video coordinator before taking on a player development role in 2021.
From Student Manager to SEC Strategist
During his four seasons with Ole Miss women's basketball, he helped guide the Rebels to landmark wins over three AP top‑five opponents, contributed to a first‑round NCAA tournament victory over the Gonzaga Bulldogs, and was part of two Sweet 16 appearances and a school‑record SEC win total.
His work in roster construction earned him a spot on ESPN’s No. 2‑ranked transfer portal class, while his behind‑the‑scenes contributions in film breakdown and daily operations left a lasting imprint on player development.
Academic Foundations and Future Impact
Whitehead holds a bachelor's degree earned in 2020 and a master's in physical education and coaching pedagogy completed in 2022, credentials that align with SIUE’s emphasis on academic excellence alongside athletic ambition.
