A Championship Night in Aroostook County
Fort Fairfield High School clinched its third Class D baseball state championship on Thursday, defeating Telstar 4-1 in a game that blended power hitting with razor‑sharp defense. The victory marks the first title for the team since 1994 and adds a new chapter to a program that has long been a staple of Maine high school baseball.
The Eagles opened the scoring in the third inning, when a flurry of consecutive hits by Levi Cole, Graedon King‑Rosado and Charlie Griffeth set the stage for a run that would prove decisive. King‑Rosado’s clutch single later in the fourth added another tally, while Cayden Ala’s stolen base and double underscored the team’s aggressive base running.
Standout Performances
Senior right‑hander Jonah LeBlanc dominated the mound, tossing 6 ⅓ innings and striking out six batters while surrendering only three earned runs. His composure under pressure was evident when he turned a double play in the fifth to extricate the team from a jam. Meanwhile, Bryson Walker of Telstar matched him with eight strikeouts, but a timely throw from Eric Helstrom in the sixth caught Michael Early at the plate, preserving the lead.
Defensive highlights peppered the contest, from Helstrom’s arm‑strong throw that halted a Telstar rally to a series of clean fielding plays that kept the Eagles’ opponents off balance. Coach John Ala, who guided the team’s scouting and preparation, praised the squad’s attention to detail and execution.
The championship not only adds a trophy to Fort Fairfield’s storeroom but also cements the legacy of a program that has now captured three state titles, the previous ones coming in 1970 and 1994. With a blend of seasoned seniors and emerging talent, the Eagles look poised to remain a force in upcoming seasons.
