The Utah Utes entered their third season in the Big 12 with a clear ambition: capture the conference’s first championship in program history. A 11‑win campaign in 2025 placed them among the league’s elite, but a narrow miss in the title game left a lingering sense of unfinished business.
A dominant offensive line
Central to that run was a unit that topped all Power Four programs in rushing yards per game. The line’s effectiveness stemmed from a blend of size, experience, and relentless technique, allowing the Utes to control the tempo against even the toughest defenses.
Spencer Fano and Caleb Lomu, both projected as first‑round NFL draft picks, anchored the exterior, while veteran interior pieces Jaren Kump, Tanoa Togiai and Michael Mokofisi provided the gritty push at the line of scrimmage.
Head coach Kyle Whittingham repeatedly praised the group, calling it potentially the best offensive line the program has ever fielded. Their production was reflected in the team’s balanced attack and low sack numbers.
Departures and a new direction
The 2025 offseason, however, brought significant turnover. Kump, Togiai, Mokofisi and longtime line coach Jim Harding all departed, with Harding heading to a defensive line role at Michigan. Their exits create a void that will test the Utes’ ability to maintain momentum.
Whittingham has indicated that the next iteration of the line will rely on younger talent and internal promotions, but the loss of proven starters raises questions about continuity and chemistry heading into the 2026 season.
Despite the uncertainty, the program’s recruiting pipeline remains strong, and the coaching staff believes the experience gained from a near‑miss can fuel a more focused approach. If the Utes can blend fresh talent with the lessons of 2025, the chase for a first Big 12 title may finally materialize.
