The Lynnville-Sully baseball team posted a 5-2 victory over the sixth-ranked Sigourney Savages on Tuesday, snapping the Savages' ten-game winning streak in the South Iowa Cedar League.
From the outset the Hawks took control, plating two runs in the first inning and never relinquishing the lead, despite committing four errors that allowed two unearned runs to score for Sigourney.
Both squads finished with seven hits apiece, but the runs that did cross the plate for Sigourney were unearned, a fact that underscored the defensive lapses that kept the game closer than the final score might suggest.
Carsen Kottenstette paced the offense with a double, two RBIs and a run scored, while Ashton Rozendaal added two hits and two stolen bases. Trace Carlson contributed a hit and two RBIs, and JD Richards was a catalyst in the later non-conference matchup, finishing with three hits, three runs and two RBIs.
Key Pitching Performances
On the mound, Connor Deal earned the win, tossing 2 ⅔ innings of shutout baseball, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out three. Reliever Brody Borg recorded his first varsity save, surrendering a single unearned run over 1 ⅓ innings.
The victory extends Lynnville-Sully's dominance in the series, improving to five wins in the last six meetings against Sigourney, a streak that has helped the Hawks climb the league standings.
Non-Conference Win Over Madrid
The team also demonstrated offensive firepower in a non-conference clash with Madrid, routing the Tigers 13-3. Richards and Borg each contributed multiple hits and RBIs, while Carlson remained unbeaten on the season with a solid outing.
With a balanced attack and a pitching staff that continues to tighten up, the Hawks are poised to remain competitive as they navigate the remainder of the schedule, aiming to translate early-season momentum into a deep playoff run.
