The Bloomington South Scrappers made history this weekend, advancing to the IHSAA Class 4A state title game at Indianapolis' Victory Field. The achievement marked the culmination of a journey that began on neighborhood sandlots and backyard tosses for a senior class of thirteen.
From the moment they first picked up a bat, each player had imagined the roar of the crowd at the state final. Their path through the tournament was defined by relentless chemistry, late‑inning comebacks and a unity that seemed to grow with every practice.
Coach Phil Kluesner, who has guided the program for several seasons, praised the community's overwhelming support, noting that the stands were packed with families, alumni and local fans eager to witness the Scrappers' moment.
The championship game pitted South against a formidable Lake Central squad, whose left‑handed ace Owen Kopercinksi limited the Scrappers to just three hits while striking out six batters. An early rally fell short, and the 4‑0 final score reflected the opposition's dominance.
Xavier Hemingway, the senior pitcher, expressed pride and gratitude after the game, saying the experience had been a lifelong dream. Fellow senior Max Surdam echoed the sentiment, highlighting the team's resilience and the bonds forged over years of competition.
Despite the loss, the Scrappers' legacy was cemented by moments of perseverance and a Mental Attitude Award presented to Blake Azcui, recognizing his sportsmanship and dedication.
