A boost to the defensive backfield
North Carolina Tar Heels have secured a verbal commitment from three-star defensive back Trey Johnson, a prospect who ranks 1,265th nationally and 121st among defensive backs in the 2027 recruiting cycle.
Johnson chose UNC over several other programs, including Arizona State, Baylor, Houston and Texas Tech, narrowing his options to a single school that aligns with his academic and athletic goals.
The pledge comes as the Tar Heels aim to rebound from a lackluster 2025 campaign that left the coaching staff eager to inject fresh talent into the roster.
With this addition, North Carolina now counts five players in its 2027 class, a modest but strategic haul as the program seeks to restore competitiveness in the ACC.
Coaches and analysts alike view Johnson’s skill set as a potential anchor for the secondary, offering versatility and a high-school pedigree that could translate into immediate impact.
