John Leonard, a 27‑year‑old forward who signed a one‑year, $850,000 contract with the Detroit Red Wings, is entering his second season with the club after a breakout year in the American Hockey League.
During the 2024‑25 campaign he lit up the Grand Rapids Griffins with 33 goals in 47 games, earning a spot on the AHL Second All‑Star Team and drawing praise from Red Wings coach Todd McLellan for his speed, shot and offensive creativity.
Leonard also proved his NHL readiness during two recall stints, contributing two goals and two assists in 11 games and showing he can translate his AHL success to the big stage.
Roster turbulence creates opportunity
The Red Wings' roster is in flux. Center Dylan Larkin has publicly requested a trade, while veteran winger Patrick Kane, an unrestricted free agent, remains undecided about his future in Detroit. Both situations could open up significant ice time for Leonard.
If the club follows through on the trade talks, Leonard may see a larger role on the top six, especially given his proven goal‑scoring record of 80 goals over the past two seasons, including playoffs.
Coach McLellan has repeatedly highlighted Leonard’s ability to create offense and said the organization is excited to see how his skill set fits into the team’s evolving identity.
