Richard Campbell enters his seventh year as the athletic trainer for the Rutgers University men’s basketball program, a tenure marked by close collaboration with head coach Steve Pikiell that began nine seasons ago, when Pikiell was still at Stony Brook.
During the first three seasons with the Scarlet Knights, Campbell’s injury‑management strategy kept players on the court, with only 17 combined games missed due to injury, a statistic that underscores his preventive approach.
A data‑driven approach to player health
At the RWJBarnabas Health Athletic Performance Center, Campbell integrates a suite of technologies — including Sparta Science, Catapult, Polar Team Pro and GymAware — to capture objective performance metrics and tailor training prescriptions.
Sparta Science delivers biomechanical data that informs individualized workouts, while Catapult’s micro‑sensors provide real‑time movement analysis. Polar Team Pro monitors heart‑rate trends for load management, and GymAware records power output to track fatigue.
Before joining Rutgers, Campbell honed his craft at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he oversaw sports‑medicine services, and earlier still he interned with the Arizona Cardinals and served at Stephen F. Austin State University.
His academic background includes a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Exercise Science (2009), a master’s degree and certification in Athletic Training (2011), and a personal milestone when he married Karissa DePalma in October 2015, later welcoming daughter Collyns in May.
