Rob Rassey Tapped to Lead Harvard Hockey Amid Coaching Shuffle

The former Michigan assistant returns to Cambridge after a distinguished playing and coaching career

Rob Rassey, a longtime assistant coach with deep ties to both Harvard and the broader college‑hockey community, has accepted an offer to become the new head coach of the Crimson program.

A Quiet Transition at Harvard

His most recent role was a four‑year stint as an assistant at the University of Michigan, where the Wolverines reached the Frozen Four on three occasions, highlighting his involvement with elite collegiate teams.

Rassey previously served under Ted Donato, who stepped down after 22 years as Harvard’s head coach, a departure that created the vacancy he is now filling.

The search for a permanent replacement also considered Dartmouth assistant Jason Tapp and Niagara head coach Jason Lammers, but Rassey’s familiarity with the institution and his proven record made him the clear frontrunner.

Before entering coaching, he played forward for Northeastern University from 2005 to 2009, recording 13 goals and 17 assists in 123 games, and he is a native of Shelby Township, Michigan.

After leaving Harvard in 2018‑19, Rassey worked as an NHL scout and in the USHL before returning to the college ranks at Michigan, a trajectory that blends professional scouting with developmental coaching.
