A Scoring Legacy
Indiana University’s basketball program has long been celebrated for producing some of the most prolific scorers in college history. From the hardwood of Bloomington to the national stage, a succession of Hoosiers have etched their names into the record books with point totals that still stand as benchmarks for future generations.
At the top of that lineage stands Calbert Cheaney, who amassed 2,613 career points between 1989 and 1993. His relentless scoring not only broke Indiana’s own mark but also set a new standard for the Big Ten, a record that still reverberates in the conference’s annals.
Close behind is Steve Alford, a 2,438‑point contributor from 1983 to 1987. Alford’s impact went beyond statistics; his leadership helped the Hoosiers capture the 1987 national championship, cementing his place as a pivotal figure in the school’s modern era.
The legacy of scoring excellence stretches back to Don Schlundt, whose 2,192 points from 1951 to 1955 placed him among the early greats, while Mike Woodson added 2,061 points between 1976 and 1980 before embarking on a successful NBA career.
Yogi Ferrell, who tallied 1,986 points from 2012 to 2016, became known for his clutch performances in big games, and Alan Henderson contributed 1,979 points from 1991 to 1995 with a versatile style that endeared him to fans.
Damon Bailey’s 1,741 points between 1990 and 1994 highlighted a high‑school phenom who transitioned smoothly to the collegiate ranks, and Kent Benson’s 1,740 points from 1973 to 1977 showcased the dominance of a center who anchored the paint.
More recently, Trayce Jackson‑Davis added 2,258 points to the list between 2019 and 2023, continuing the tradition of impact players who shape the team’s identity each season.
Beyond the statistical leaders, names such as Keith Smart, Bruce Flowers, Bill Laimbeer, and Adrian Dantley remain part of the broader narrative, each having left a distinct imprint on the program’s culture. Under the tutelage of coach Bob Knight, these players helped define an era marked by disciplined play and relentless competitiveness.
