A Strategic Addition to Villanova's Basketball Program
Kyle Tarp officially joined Villanova University’s men’s basketball program in June 2026, taking on the role of top performance coach. His appointment marks a strategic move to bolster the Wildcats’ approach to player development and physical preparation.
During his three‑year stint at the University of Maryland, Tarp contributed to a program that reached the NCAA Sweet 16 in the 2024‑25 season under head coach Kevin Willard. He worked directly with several NBA prospects, including Derik Queen, Kevin Huerter and Bruno Fernando, helping them transition to professional competition.
From Academic Roots to Professional Credentials
Before Maryland, Tarp honed his skills as an intern at the University of Texas, where he assisted both the men’s and women’s basketball teams with strength and conditioning. He holds a master’s degree in sports science and nutrition from Texas and graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s in exercise biology from UC Davis in 2006.
Tarp’s professional credentials include certification as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist from the National Strength and Conditioning Association, a Level‑1 Sports Performance Coach designation from the United States Weightlifting Association, and additional credentials from the National Academy of Sports Medicine.
Outside the gym, Tarp lives with his wife Rachel and their two children, daughter Avery and son Trenton, balancing family life with the demands of collegiate athletics.
Tarp’s methodology blends functional movement screening with nutrition planning, aiming to reduce injury risk while enhancing on‑court explosiveness. Early feedback from players and staff suggests the program is already reshaping conditioning standards at Villanova.
