Wichita State University has announced the hiring of Connor Vanover, a 7‑foot‑5 former college basketball player, to serve as a graduate assistant on its men’s basketball staff. The move is designed to bring a unique physical presence to practice sessions and to leverage Vanover’s deep knowledge of the game.
Vanover’s six‑year playing career included a standout season at Oral Roberts University, where he earned Summit League Defensive Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year honors in 2022‑23 under head coach Paul Mills, who recruited the Arkansas native out of high school. Prior to college, Vanover served as a volunteer assistant at Baptist Prep, further honing his coaching instincts.
A Rare Height Advantage
At 7‑foot‑5, Vanover towers over most of the Shockers’ roster, giving Will Berg, a 7‑foot‑2 center, a practice partner who can simulate the kind of shot‑blocking and interior pressure he will face on game night. That extra reach allows Berg to work on footwork, perimeter mobility and finishing around the rim in ways that ordinary teammates cannot replicate.
Head coach Paul Mills emphasized that Vanover’s presence is not just about size; it is about the defensive instincts and shot‑making versatility he brings. “Connor’s experience as a pick‑and‑pop threat and his defensive pedigree make him an ideal mentor for our big men,” Mills said. The staff hopes the collaboration will accelerate Berg’s development and enrich the overall competitive edge of the program.
