Jimmy Poston, who donned the No. 75 jersey for the University of South Carolina from 1967 through 1970, remains a cornerstone of the program’s defensive history.
A Defensive Pillar
His contributions were most pronounced during the 1969 season, when the Gamecocks captured their sole official conference championship, a feat that still stands as a highlight in the school’s annals.
That year the Gamecocks’ defense limited opponents to an average of 18.1 points per game, and Poston’s relentless effort anchored the unit, culminating in a 100‑tackle senior season that included a standout performance with 15 tackles against North Carolina.
Mentorship and Legacy
Teammates and coaches alike remember his mentorship of John LeHeup, who would go on to earn All‑American honors and later be enshrined in the USC Hall of Fame, crediting Poston’s guidance as a pivotal influence.
Following his collegiate career, Poston was selected in the 1971 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders, where he experienced a brief but eventful stint before continuing his professional journey in the Canadian Football League.
Though his time in the NFL was short, Poston’s impact endures, symbolizing an era when South Carolina’s defense was among the nation’s most formidable.
