Professional Women’s Hockey League Secures Historic Investments from Kilmer Sports and Ilitch Companies

New funding paves the way for expanded rosters, additional franchises and a push toward mainstream recognition

A New Era for Women's Professional Hockey

The Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) has taken a decisive step forward with its first external investments, announced today by Kilmer Sports Ventures and Ilitch Companies. The partnership comes as the league celebrates a milestone season that attracted more than 1.1 million spectators and logged over 2 million cumulative attendees since its inception.

Kilmer Sports Ventures, headed by Larry Tanenbaum, brings a deep pedigree in professional hockey and a longstanding commitment to women's athletics. Tanenbaum, who serves as Chairman Emeritus of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, will apply his experience to accelerate the league’s growth. Joining him, Ilitch Companies, led by CEO Chris Ilitch, will contribute its extensive background in sports and entertainment, having stewardship of the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Tigers.

Both ownership groups share a common vision: to expand the league’s footprint and solidify its place in the North American sports landscape. The PWHL has already confirmed four new franchises — Detroit, Hamilton, Las Vegas and San Jose — to join the 2026‑27 season, a move that will deepen regional representation and broaden the fan base.

The financial infusion is expected to fuel a 35 percent year‑over‑year increase in sponsorship revenue and push e‑commerce merchandise sales beyond a 50 percent surge. With more than 682 million social‑media impressions recorded to date, the league’s digital reach is expanding in tandem with its on‑ice growth.

Foundational supporters Mark and Kimbra Walter have been instrumental since the league’s launch in 2023, and their continued involvement underscores confidence in the PWHL’s trajectory. The new capital will also enable the league to deepen community outreach, enhance player development programs, and explore innovative fan experiences.
