Starting with the 2026‑2027 season, the Illinois High School Athletic Association will mandate a shot clock for all varsity basketball games, joining a wave of 31 states that have already embraced the rule.
A Modernization Push for the Game
Rock Island head coach Marc Polite says the shot clock modernizes the sport and is essential for its evolution, arguing that it brings high school basketball in line with the faster pace seen at higher levels.
Iowa implemented the shot clock four years ago, and its experience has shown that the timer not only speeds up play but also sharpens player focus and forces coaches to make quicker strategic decisions.
United Township head coach Andy Saey echoes this sentiment, noting that the shot clock "speeds up the game and improves player focus," and that it ultimately makes coaching more dynamic and engaging.
The new requirement is expected to influence training approaches across the region, giving players a clearer rhythm and giving coaches a new tool to shape game flow as the next season approaches.
