A grassroots push
In Chaska, a suburb of the Twin Cities, a group of high school students is rallying behind a simple idea: to have girls flag football officially sanctioned by the Minnesota State High School League.
Abbie Harmon, a senior at Southwest Christian High School, says the prospect of stepping onto the field as part of an official team is exhilarating, marking a milestone for female athletes in the region.
The spark for the movement came from Susie Engebreton, a freshman who first proposed the concept after an informational meeting that drew a surprisingly large crowd.
Interest surged quickly, prompting the league to work with a Vikings‑backed flag football advisory committee to explore the sport’s fit within existing structures.
What’s next?
If the board gives its approval, the sport could be rolled out across member schools as early as the next academic year, giving more young women the chance to compete under the same structured framework that has long defined high school athletics.
