A Historic Weekend at Naval Base Coronado
The inaugural NASCAR San Diego Weekend transformed Naval Base Coronado into a vibrant arena of speed and service, drawing more than one hundred thousand visitors for a celebration that honored the United States Navy’s 250th anniversary.
At the heart of the festivities was the newly unveiled Qualcomm Circuit, a 3.4‑mile layout that snakes through the base’s expansive grounds, threading past aircraft hangars, ship docks and historic military installations.
Honors and Ceremonies
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth attended the Sunday pre‑race ceremony, serving as the honorary starter and addressing the crowd before the engines roared.
The event featured the participation of one hundred ten NASCAR drivers across three racing series, while thirty‑nine local Navy units partnered with Cup‑series competitors to provide tours and community engagement.
Corey Heim claimed his first career victory in the Cup Series race, a moment that underscored the competitive spirit of the weekend.
Assistant Secretary of the Navy Benjamin C. Kohlmann used the platform to promote Navy Reserve officer and NASCAR driver Cmdr. Jesse Iwuji, highlighting the unique blend of military duty and motorsport.
The U.S. Navy Parachute Team, known as the Leap Frogs, performed daring aerial displays each day, while local aviation squadrons conducted flyovers that added a dramatic flourish to the proceedings.
Medal of Honor recipients retired U.S. Navy Capt. Elmer Royce Williams and retired Master Chief (SEAL) Britt Slabinski were recognized on the track, and Capt. Christopher Carmichael presided over a joint service enlistment ceremony for twenty new enlistees.
NASCAR driver Jimmi Johnson piloted a car honoring the Blackjacks of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 21, a tribute that resonated with the audience.
The partnership between the Navy and NASCAR, dating back to 1957, reached a new milestone as the first national‑series race was held on an active military installation, showcasing a unique synergy between two iconic American institutions.
