Strategic Partnerships Drive PWHL’s Next Chapter
The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) has revealed a significant infusion of capital through a partnership with Ilitch Companies and Kilmer Sports Ventures. The alliance marks a pivotal moment as the league gears up for its third season, now set to feature twelve franchises across North America.
Four new teams will debut in the 2026‑27 campaign, joining existing clubs in Detroit, Hamilton, Las Vegas and San Jose. This expansion builds on the league’s momentum since its 2023 launch, when sponsorship revenue climbed 35% and online merchandise sales surged more than 50% year‑over‑year.
Chris Ilitch, chief executive of Ilitch Companies, said he is proud to be part of the PWHL’s story and to help broaden the game’s reach. His statement underscores a commitment not only to financial backing but also to the long‑term development of women’s professional hockey.
Kilmer Sports Ventures, led by chairman Larry Tanenbaum, has a track record of investing in high‑profile sports properties, including Canada’s first WNBA franchise, Tempo, and French football club AS Saint‑Étienne. Tanenbaum highlighted the importance of building world‑class women’s sports organizations that can compete at the highest level.
Mark and Kimbra Walter will continue to oversee league operations alongside the PWHL Advisory Board, ensuring that the strategic vision remains aligned with the interests of players, fans and partners alike.
The partnership reflects a growing confidence in the commercial and cultural potential of women’s hockey. With a clear pathway for athletes and a robust infrastructure in place, the PWHL is poised to cement its place as a premier professional league.
