A Milestone in the Making
The University of Kansas marked a key construction milestone as crews completed the placement of more than 1,200 tons of steel for the east side of the new football stadium bowl, a moment celebrated on the campus in Lawrence.
The achievement forms part of the broader KU Gateway District initiative, a multi‑phase plan that seeks to reshape the stadium’s footprint and create a mixed‑use neighborhood that will eventually host student housing, a hotel, retail outlets and enhanced game‑day amenities.
Phase two of the development will focus on enclosing the newly topped steel structure and moving interior construction forward, with the goal of delivering a reimagined fan experience that blends modern design with the university’s tradition.
David Young, project director for the Clark‑JE Dunn Construction joint venture, described the topping out as a testament to the coordinated effort across design, engineering and construction that made the milestone possible.
Banks Floodman, development director for Edgemoor/Sunflower Partners, reflected on the personal significance of the moment, recalling how the program’s evolution has unfolded over the years and what the new facilities mean for future generations of fans.
Travis Goff, KU’s athletic director, praised the project as one of the most ambitious and far‑reaching undertakings in the region, emphasizing that the upgraded stadium will serve as a cornerstone for both athletics and community engagement.
University officials say the next steps involve sealing the building envelope and completing interior work, with the project on schedule to bring the first phase of the Gateway District to life later this year.
