A strategic shift for Cyclone athletics
Iowa State University announced on Tuesday that it will begin selling alcoholic beverages at its football and men's basketball games, marking a significant policy change for the Cyclones' home venues.
The sales will be limited to beer, wine and pre‑packaged cocktails and will be available at Jack Trice Stadium and Hilton Coliseum starting this fall, giving fans a new option while they cheer on the team.
Athletic director Jamie Pollard said the move follows a trend among peer institutions that have successfully integrated alcohol sales without compromising safety, and he expressed confidence that the university can maintain a secure environment.
A portion of the proceeds will be earmarked for alcohol‑education initiatives, student wellness programs and enhancements to public safety at events, according to university officials.
The decision comes as the athletic department grapples with rising operational costs and seeks new revenue streams beyond ticket sales, donations and sponsorships.
Safety measures and education
University officials noted that the policy will be rolled out gradually, with strict monitoring to ensure compliance with age restrictions and responsible serving practices.
Comparisons with peer institutions show that similar programs have been implemented without incident, reinforcing the university's confidence in a safe rollout.
