Coastal Carolina University announced this week that Jake Gautreau has been appointed to the role of assistant coach and hitting coach for its baseball program, bringing a decade of collegiate experience and a national championship pedigree to the Chanticleers.
A Proven Track Record
Gautreau’s most recent tenure was at Mississippi State, where he spent eight seasons and contributed to the team’s 2021 NCAA National Championship victory; his work earned him the 2019 D1Baseball National Assistant Coach of the Year honor and positioned him as a key recruiter and developer of All‑America talent.
Prior to his time in Starkville, Gautreau served as hitting coach at East Carolina in 2026 and earlier held positions at Tulane, where he also acted as interim head coach in 2014; he previously spent five seasons at Tulane, guiding the Green Wave to their first College World Series appearance in 2001 and earning seven All‑America recognitions as a player.
Before transitioning to coaching, Gautreau worked as a certified player agent with the Boras Corporation for three years, and he was drafted in the first round of the 2001 MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres, later playing in the farm systems of the Padres, Cleveland Indians and New York Mets.
What This Means for Coastal Carolina
Head coach Chris Lemonis praised Gautreau’s blend of playing experience and coaching acumen, noting that his strong relationships with recruits and proven player‑development track record will bolster the program’s competitiveness as it aims for continued success in the highly competitive conference.
