Oneida tops Class C flag football rankings ahead of 2026 playoffs

Undefeated Express prepares for semifinal showdown as Section III expands tournament

Oneida’s flag football program, known as the Express, entered the 2026 season as the No. 1 seed in Class C after finishing the regular schedule with a 14‑1 record. The team’s only loss came at home against Syracuse East on April 30, but the victory over the same opponent earlier in the year helped cement its top ranking.

The postseason this spring is being contested across three classes, a shift from the seven‑team format used in 2024. This expansion reflects growing participation, with fourteen teams now competing for sectional titles.

Semifinals and championship schedule

Oneida will host a semifinal against the winner of a Friday matchup between OnTech Charter and Sherburne‑Earlville, opponents they have defeated twice during an 11‑0 start to the season. The Bulldogs, representing Westmoreland/Oriskany, secured the No. 2 seed after opening their regular season with wins over those same rivals.

Quarterfinal games open the postseason on Friday, after which higher seeds will host semifinals on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. All three championship contests are slated for May 22 at Westmoreland’s brand‑new turf field.

State tournament pathway

Sectional champions will advance to the state tournament, where finals are scheduled for June 6 and 7 at Homer and Cortland high schools. The journey from the regular season through the final whistle has drawn considerable attention from local fans and school communities alike.
