Vanderbilt University’s football program has secured a new commitment that could reshape its defensive front for the class of 2027.
A Disruptive Presence on the Line
Hunter Eligon, a three-star defensive lineman from Southern California, announced his pledge to the Commodores on June 22, choosing Vanderbilt over a shortlist that included Northwestern, Boise State, Arizona and Arizona State.
Eligon currently stars at Los Alamitos High School but will transfer to Western High School in 2026, a move that will give him additional exposure to SEC-level competition before arriving on campus.
The recruit’s national ranking places him at No. 1,483 among all prospects and No. 138 within the state of California, while his specific placement among defensive linemen sits at No. 147, according to Rivals’ latest composite.
Coaches were impressed during a June 12 campus visit, and ten days later Eligon formally committed to head coach Clark Lea, citing the staff’s vision for a penetrating front seven.
Known for his relentless motor and ability to shed blockers, Eligon has already made his presence felt on special teams, blocking punts and field goals that have swung momentum in key prep games.
His knack for creating turnovers and disrupting run lanes aligns with Vanderbilt’s recent emphasis on tightening the interior defense, a unit that has shown marked improvement over the past two seasons.
The addition brings the Commodores’ 2027 recruiting class to 14 total pledges, with ten of those classified as three-star athletes, positioning the group at No. 31 nationally and No. 12 within the SEC.
Program officials view the commitment as part of a broader recruitment surge that could sustain momentum into the next recruiting cycle, reinforcing the belief that Vanderbilt is climbing the conference’s talent ladder.
