Mike Nicholson, a Savannah, Missouri native, has been named to the University of Missouri women's basketball coaching staff, bringing a wealth of experience and a championship pedigree to Columbia.
A Storied Coaching Journey
Over the past five seasons, Nicholson served as the chief of staff for the Kansas State women's basketball program, where he helped the Wildcats compile 112 victories and secure three NCAA tournament appearances. His contributions earned him the 2021 WBCA National Assistant Coach of the Year award, underscoring his impact on one of the nation's most competitive programs.
Before Kansas State, Nicholson spent 14 years as the top assistant at Missouri Western State University, guiding the Griffon men to 228 wins, three MIAA regular‑season titles, two tournament championships and five NCAA Division II tournament berths. He also worked under Hall of Fame head coach Tom Smith and contributed to the program's rise during the mid‑1990s while on staff at Kansas City under coaches Lee Hunt and Bob Sundvold.
What This Means for the Tigers
Nicholson's arrival is expected to bolster recruiting efforts and deepen the Tigers' tactical repertoire. Athletic director Carla Williams highlighted his proven ability to develop talent and his familiarity with the Midwest recruiting landscape as key assets for the program's next chapter.
A Legacy of Mentorship
Beyond wins and accolades, Nicholson is known for mentoring players and staff alike. His collaborative approach and emphasis on player development have consistently translated into sustained success, a philosophy he now aims to embed within the Mizzou women's program.
