Rain Delays 10th Field of Dreams Baseball All-Star Rivals Game, Rescheduled for Wednesday

Senior players from the Lackawanna League will compete in a rescheduled baseball showdown, with proceeds benefiting the Bill Howerton Strikeout Cancer Initiative.

Postponement and Rescheduling

A sudden downpour forced the cancellation of the originally scheduled Monday contest, pushing the 10th Field of Dreams Baseball All-Star Rivals Game to Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The showdown will take place at PNC Field, where gates will open at 4:30 p.m. for spectators eager to watch the region’s top senior talent.

Nineteen of the league’s 24 schools will be represented, with the Fightins squad drawing players from Riverside, Scranton, Wallenpaupack, Scranton Prep, Valley View, North Pocono, Carbondale Area, Susquehanna, Lackawanna Trail, and Blue Ridge. Guiding the Fightins is Jamie Higgins of Scranton, while Bill Zalewski of Abington Heights coaches the Bombers, a team that includes athletes from Mid Valley, Elk Lake, Abington Heights, Honesdale, Old Forge, Lakeland, Dunmore, West Scranton, and Western Wayne.

Softball All‑Star Game Set for Tuesday

The Field of Dreams Softball All-Star Rivals Game will unfold Tuesday at 6 p.m. on the University of Scranton’s Magis Field. Like its baseball counterpart, the softball event will feature the league’s elite seniors, with admission priced at $5. Gates for the softball contest will open at 5 p.m., giving fans ample time to settle in before the first pitch.

Team White, composed of players from Abington Heights, Forest City, Mid Valley, North Pocono, Scranton Prep, Scranton, Wallenpaupack, West Scranton, and Western Wayne, will be managed by John Connor of West Scranton. Opposing them, Team Purple includes athletes from Dunmore, Elk Lake, Holy Cross, Old Forge, Carbondale Area, Montrose, Mountain View, Riverside, Lackawanna Trail, and Lakeland, under the direction of Sarah Cantarella of Dunmore.

Community Impact and Fundraising Efforts

Both the baseball and softball contests serve a dual purpose: they showcase the region’s rising stars while channeling proceeds to the Bill Howerton Strikeout Cancer Initiative. The partnership involves the Lackawanna County Visitors Bureau, the Scranton/Wilkes‑Barre RailRiders, and the Bill Howerton Strike Out Cancer Foundation, all of which help amplify the event’s reach and ensure that every dollar raised supports cancer research and patient services.
